Science is Fun class presentations: ASU Science is Fun continues to help students discover, explore and learn science through interactive classroom presentations based on real research conducted by ASU scientists! Availability can vary from semester to semester, so please contact us for more information on presentations available for your classroom. Meet Our interns.
Mentorship program: ASU Science is Fun interns mentor high school students who, in turn, mentor elementary and middle school students. This project helps create a science family pipeline from the elementary schools to the university.
STEM Career Project: ASU graduate and undergraduate interns visit middle and high school students to facilitate interactive science demonstrations that focus on STEM based college majors and careers.
ASU Science is Fun is administered by ASU’s Eyring MAterials Center (formally known as LeRoy Eyring Center for Solid State Science), with financial support from the National Science Foundation. Community collaborators have included Arizona Science Center, Phoenix Symphony, Phoenix Children's Hospital and Sally Ride Science Festivals. Corporate contributors include 49er Minerals, Arizona Mineral & Mining Museum, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Phoenix, HEAD/Penn Racquet Sports, ON Semiconductor and others.
ASU Science is Fun enjoyed an earlier collaboration with two education organizations: the Center for Research on Education in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology; and Math-Science Partnership Project Pathways. In this project, senior Interns and Graduate Research Fellows mentored 22 High School Interns recruited from local area high schools. Together, they developed presentations for the Energy module, which was designed especially for this project to address Arizona Science Education Standards for energy for sixth grade and high school. In Fall 2006, the High School Interns, supervised by their mentors, gave 46 presentations at 15 schools to 1610 sixth grade students and their teachers at local elementary schools. Survey data show the High School Interns found the internship enjoyable, rewarding, and valuable: “I wish the presentations weren’t over.”
Teachers felt their students were positively impacted: “My students were actively engaged and in awe of the cool presentation.” They reported being more excited about teaching science and wanted supplementary materials related to the presentations. The sixth grade students reported that the presentation was fun, the High School Interns were cool, and they learned a lot. A majority of them want to be a Science is Fun presenter in high school:“This is fun, not like the book.”
